"AGT Completes Biofilm Contract With NIH"
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -(BUSINESS WIRE)- March. 27, 2006 - Atmospheric Glow Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:AGWT - News; AGT) has recently completed a two year study with the National Institutes of Health demonstrating the feasibility of using its atmospheric plasma technology to destroy biofilms that impact human health. Biofilms are communities of microorganisms that are firmly attached to a surface such as a urinary catheter, a medical implant, or the inside of dental unit water lines. Once established, biofilms are extremely resistant to antibiotics and other common antimicrobial compounds. The impact on health is tremendous; a study by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control has estimated that 65% of hospital-acquired infections result from biofilm.
"We see tremendous potential for this technology," said Garth James of the Center for Biofilm Engineering at Montana State University. "We have evaluated a number of technologies aimed at combating biofilm, and are quite impressed by the performance of AGT's plasma system."
